My mom kicks ass, old school style.

For this month's round table it's all about the family and games. I've been waiting for one like this, as I have the perfect story to tell. It's how my mom and I beat a game that none of my video gaming loving friends could do.

Back in the early 90s an amazing title came out for the Genesis, the game was Toe Jam and Earl, don't look down on the name as the game has quite a few conventions that was ahead of its time. The game featured split screen co-op allowing players to tackle the game either together or apart while still contributing. The other feature was that every level in the game besides the first one was randomize, from starting to exit points to the various enemies. This also effected how to end the game as well, in order to win you needed to fix their spaceship and parts were scattered throughout the levels. You could be very lucky and end the game around level 17, or go on for twice that amount. Playing this with my friends we came close several times, even got as far as into the 20s, but never finished the game.

Then one day I sat down with my mom and we played the game all afternoon, unfortunately my leg surgeries have messed with most of my memories of the 90s so I can't go into detail about it. Yet at the end of that afternoon we found all the space ship parts and beat the game. I believe we finished the game either in the high 20s or mid 30s, but if there is one thing I remember clearly is the ending.
The ending was quite brilliant for it's time, you could wander around their home planet talking to the various creatures there and basically relax until it was time to shut off the genesis.

That was the pinnacle of my mom's video game ability, although she does play blastris B on the super scope for the Snes pretty well. The other game she loves to play is Twisted! on the 3d0 and she has managed to beat me in a few times. I even taught her the fine art of zombie killing with House of the Dead 2 and 3 on the Wii :)
