I'm trying my hand at creating a design challenge for those who read this blog; for my first challenge it's all about co-op. Having spent the better part of my video game playing time with Left 4 Dead since last November I've come to appreciate and love the co-op game play of it. One of my "designer dreams" is to create an open world title built from the ground up to be co-op based and I have two ideas that I'm going to share later on. Here are a few guidelines for this challenge:
1. The game must be built from the ground up as a co-op experience , you can't design a singleplayer game and tack on a multiplayer aspect to it. The game should be a genre or game system that hasn't seen co-op done in your way before.
2. The basic tenets of co-op have to be followed, such as there should be no benefits for killing your partner and all players on a team must work together to accomplish a larger goal. Players don't have to be tether to each other and can split up if need be. However for one player to win, all players on the team need to win.
3. No switching players in, all available players must be playing at the same time. For those that have different teams of players, asymmetrical or symmetrical team balance is acceptable.
Since I'm posting this around April 14th, I'll close this one on May 14th if anyone is even interested in this. I'll still post my ideas though as I'm crazy like that :)
Josh.
